Radeon HD 4000 series specifications surfaces

The ATI Radeon HD 4000 series is slated for late Q2. Information about the high-end RV770 has been leaking onto the web, from here and there, but the exact specifications has remained in the shadows. German hardware site Hartware.net has gotten their hands on what seems to be pretty authentic information. As far as we can tell, it looks believable and matches the rumors going around.

'Radeon HD 4800' graphics board pictured

... a report posted on a German website last month said Radeon HD 4000 graphics cards are scheduled for June.

The report might have only been a rumor, but the folks at VR-Zone have spotted a picture that suggests AMD may indeed be pretty far along on its upcoming GPUs. The picture, which was originally posted by Chinese site ChipHell, shows what's said to be an RV770 graphics board. The PCB doesn't look too different from existing RV670 boards used by Radeon HD 3870 and Radeon HD 3870 cards, but there are a few differences, namely in the placement of the memory chips and the PCI Express power connector. The area on the board that's meant to play host to the actual RV770 GPU is empty, however.

ATI Radeon 4800 Gets 480 Stream Procs

Next month will be more important for AMD’s graphics division than any other month of this year: The company is set to release the (RV770) 4800-series of graphics cards, including the models 4850, 4870 and 4870 X2. While the launch is still very much a secret, we were able to receive details and the specifications of the new cards – which will put ATI back into the ring with NVIDIA.
...
The 4850 256MB GDDR3 version will arrive as the successor of the 3850 256MB with a price in the sub-$200 range. The 4850 512MB GDDR3 should retail for $229, the 4850 512MB GDDR5 will set you back about $249-269. The big daddy, the 1GB GDDR5 powered 4870 will retail between $329-349.

When it will become available the 4870 X2 will hit the market for $499.

after releasing the 9800 series as it is, i think nVidia deserve a bit of a kick in the teeth.

hopefully this new series from ATI will get nVidia to start acting serious again ;p

rehashed 8800's my ass... *grumbles* ...bloody slackers.

well if the 4870 proves to actually be superior to any of nvidia's offerings, then i'll consider getting one!

i need something beast-like to drive my monster 30" LCD on native res!

Power to power between ATI and nVidia's new gen cards we will have to see.

If you look at it on the dollars and cents it looks like ATI is doing their best to make even their high-end card more appealing to the masses.

ATI Radeon 4800 Launch Details

We previously published several details about AMD’s next-generation graphics card lineup and as we get closer to the launch we are getting more details about the launch date, feature set and prices. The good news: The new boards will come with “physics processing capability” and prices that will start below $200 for a 512 MB board. The bad news: The 4800 series will launch after Nvidia’s GT200.
...
In terms of performance, we heard some interesting claims. A 4870 should perform on par with or better than a dual-chip 3870 X2.
...
Let’s talk about pricing. AMD decided to remain aggressive in an effort to win back market share. Pricing is actually set to a point where Nvidia is unlikely to be able to compete (that is at least what somebody is hoping for). Pricing guidelines are not finalized at this time, but according to several sources, the Radeon 4850 will succeed the 3850 512MB and should cost about $189-$219 at launch. Our sources indicated that 4870 GDDR5 cards will cost between $249 and $279, but somehow we feel that AMD might aim go for $199 and $249 at launch.
