GPU Marketshare Update

Postby powerarmour » Tue Oct 27, 2009 10:00 am

Looks like Intel is still eating the cake overall (obviously for all the integrated stuff at the moment) :-

Image

Intel: +1.6% from Q2/09, +3.3% from Q3/08
nVidia: -4.3% from Q2/09, -2.9% from Q3/08
AMD: +1.4% from Q2/09, -0.8% from Q3/08

http://techreport.com/discussions.x/17834

Both AMD and NVIDIA have lost market share to Intel compared to this time last year. However, it's the growth in shipments that's probably more important :-

Compared to the previous quarter, Intel enjoyed 25.2% growth in shipments, AMD saw 30.2%, and Nvidia just 3.3%

Intel's figures will be down to a boost in cheap laptop sales around the world, as well as PC vendors pushing new machines ready for launch with Windows 7; AMD have new products on the table, whereas NVIDIA's growth could simply be construed as just "raw growth", i.e. not tied to any particular event. Either way, it's relatively good news for everyone concerned.

According to Mercury Research's estimates, AMD surpassed nVidia in graphics marketshare during Q2.
AMD's shipments grew over 64% year-to-year and 18% quarter-to-quarter, while nVidia's shipments shrunk by 18.4% y2y and 26.7% q2q. Intel took a bit bigger portion of the cake to themselves too, which isn't surprising considering it's now integrated in most of their CPU's.

Intel graphics revenue should fall, though, I don't know how Intel will manage to describe that. Before it was a part of its cheaper chipsets, and now a part of its CPUs...

AMD GPU marketshare declining again :-

The latest GPU marketshare report from Jon Peddie Research indicates Intel and NVIDIA gained marketshare in Q3 2010 at the expense of AMD. Compared to the quarter before, Intel gained 2.2 percent to 55.6 percent and NVIDIA's marketshare rose 0.5 percent to 21.2 percent, while AMD's marketshare declined 2.7 percent to 22.3 percent.

The report also mentions that GPU sales were down 1 percent sequentially due to reduced notebook sales, which could be blamed on Apple's iPad, as the company sold 8 million of them. However, compared to the same period the year before, Q3 2010 GPU shipments are up 10 percent.

Vendor ..Q3 2009 ....Q2 2010 .......Q3 2010
AMD .......20.1% ........25.0% .........22.3%
Intel .......53.6% ........53.4% .........55.6%
Nvidia .....25.3% ........20.7% ..........21.2%

I can't see AMD or nVidia complaining about that! :hoghappy:

Their position is still way better than it was last year, and the launch of the new card should spur sales

The GTX 460 did the job for Nvidia it seems then.

The quarter in general :-

In Q1’11, Intel celebrated its fifth quarter of Embedded Processor Graphics CPU (EPG, a multi-chip design that combined a graphics processor and CPU in the same package) shipments, and enjoyed its second quarter of HPU (heterogeneous processor unit) shipments.

AMD and Intel gained in overall market share at the expense of Nvidia from the last quarter.

Year to year this quarter AMD had tremendous market share growth, Intel had above average growth, and Nvidia slipped significantly.

The Q1’11 change in total shipments from last quarter increased 10.3%, significantly above the ten-year average of -4% raising concerns about an inventory buildup that will have to run down in Q2.

Netbooks continued to contribute to notebook growth. However, the iPad has probably cannibalized some netbook sales.

Around 83 million PCs shipped worldwide in Q1’11, a drop of 5.4% compared to Q4’10, (based on an average of reports from Dataquest, IDC, and iSuppli) causing speculation on that the 10% up-swing in graphics could be inventory buildup and will have a negative impact on Q2.

Then again as with all these marketshare updates, it's not necessarily what people are actually using for gaming :-
