What does that do differently to just using patch -p1? The reason I ask is I never did that with either my 2.4.22 or 2.4.23 kernels and forcedeth seems to work just fine. Should I have used the command you suggested?

Getting back to the topic at hand, I don't think forcedeth patches cleanly against 2.4.21. I just tried it using both the straight patch -p1 < and the command blueworm posted and it didn't like either of them.

The 'p' just strips differing levels of 'path' off the front of the patch directives when looking for the appropiate file to 'patch'. What level of 'stripping' to use depends on how the patch was made and where you are in the source tree when you run the command.

If you look at the patch itself, you will see what I mean about the path.

Some experimentation is sometimes nescessary to find the right command.

I know all that, I was just wondering what the difference between patch -p1 < (variations on which I've been using for ages without incident) and what blueworm posted, patch -Np1 -i, was and whether or not the latter was better and why.

"-i" Is another method for input and "-N" ignores patches that seem to be reversed or already applied.

I assume you are using the SUSE kernel. That kernel is not a straight 2.4.21 and so the patch will not apply cleanly. If you apply it by hand, it will work (I'm using SUSE myself, just didn't get around to posting a patch for SUSE 2.4.21-144). Anyway, SUSE soon will release an updated version of their kernel INCLUDING forcedeth.

It wouldn't patch cleanly again my (I assume) vanilla 2.4.21 source either.

OK, find patches against 2.4.21 and 2.4.22 at the usual place. http://www.hailfinger.org/carldani/linux/patches/forcedeth/

doing 'ifconfig eth0' will show up the information you want.
bringing the interface up is another matter, you will need to know how you are connected to the network, and whether it uses static or dynamic IP addresses.

also, did you recompile the kernel??
