Good AM3 overclocking guide?

Postby j3pflynn » Mon Jan 25, 2010 1:53 pm

Anyone know of one? I've already tweaked it fairly well, but since I'm new to AM3, wanted to see if I was missing anything important, particularly re: the NB. I don't have the time to investigate thoroughly on my own like I did in the past.

I have a Phenom II x4 925 running @ 3.58 GHz on a Gigabyte GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H, with 4GB of Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C8; I didn't realize until it was too late to return them that I had ordered the modules for Intel H55 systems rather than AM3 :( , but I got it to work anyhow at 11-11-11-29 timings. :)

BTW, I'm really interested more in maximizing overall system performance and f@H performance than pure CPU OC.

Tough one. I got fully into squeezing every last drop out of SKT939 gear but I'm having to re-learn a lot with the new AM3 setup.

I bought a BE edition CPU and to be honest I've found that the simplest as I just switch up the multiplier (it hasnt been this easy since about the year 2000 with the flick of a dipswitch). So I'm running at a mild OC of 3Ghz up from 2.8Ghz.

Seems there are a number of ways to do it now. The old way of push up the CPU/FSB or push up some of the other bus speeds. Baffles me to be honest.

I also bought 1600 spec ram but couldnt get the system stable at that speed. Even with voltage boost it just wouldnt work so I run at 1333Mhz stock but I have pulled the latencies down to 7-7-7 from 9-9-9.

To be honest though it's hogwash for day to day use. I cant tell the difference (even in gaming) from 100% stock to the 3.2Ghz I had it clocked up to. Felt exactly the same.

It's only in number crunching excercises like folding or ripping that you see any benefit. I dont do much of that.

I havent found a really comprehensive OC guide for AM3 stuff. Not like the old DFI Street articles, they were great.

So basically I have -

Set the CPU to 0.05v higher than stock.
Bumped up my ram voltage to 1.65v.
Running at stock 1333Mhz but drastically lowered the timings.
Just upped the multiplier to OC.
Switch off all power throttling controls except Smart Fan.
Ram runs in unganged mode which is best for multitasking.
Automatic Clock Control is set to normal/Auto for all cores.

Not half as fun as the old 939 days. :(

Not a Black Edition, right?

Thanks, impar! I'll investigate those links tonight.

No, it's not a BE.
