Microsoft today announced that its Games for Windows initiative will launch an online PC gaming marketplace this fall. The service will deliver free and paid downloadable game content in competition with Valve's Steam platform.

The game content will be made available alongside trailers, demos, and other content comparable to the company's Xbox 360 offerings. Along with the added features, the Games for Windows Live interface will also be redesigned to be "much more PC friendly."

Additionally, the company announced that all Games for Windows Live multiplayer features are now entirely free.

Games for Windows Gold offered achievements, matchmaking, cross-platform play, and other features at a monthly subscription of $7.99. While the same features carry similar charges on Microsoft's Xbox 360 platform, gamers often criticized Microsoft for offering them at the same price on the PC, as free programs have traditionally offered similar functionality.

Shacknews will be speaking with Microsoft later today on the announcement, so check back for more details.

*shrug* It's a different market, but yes, it would be nice if they were treated equally.

I suspect they will, but I don't know when. However, I do know that a lot of GfWL endusers were [peed] from the multiplayer differences alone. (The Universe at War forums are all you need to see to know that.)

Anyway, I just hope non GfWL titles will be offered. It can be hard to find some MS titles for the PC anymore, except online.

I'd say PSN had to be free and open to compete with how MS does things, but that likely puts more strain on the developers to keep things going smoothly long after the game launches and all that. We've seen how lesser PC titles master servers have often just dropped off the map, which doesn't happen with managed services.

I'd be surprised if MS doesn't eventually drop the tiers, but I doubt it'll be anytime soon.

Games for Windows Interview: Breaking Down Microsoft's Entry into PC Digital Distribution

Earlier today Microsoft announced that all Games for Windows Live features will now be made totally free, in addition to revealing an online marketplace that will launch this fall that will feature digitally distributed PC gaming content.

Later on, we had the chance to speak with Games for Windows senior global director Kevin Unangst on the announcement, who gave us more information on just what Microsoft is up to on the PC.

I would rather pay for the properly managed and maintained MS live system then the Sony setup.
