Hi there.

A mate is getting rid of his old Fujistsu Siemens PC which has a Fujitsu D1567 i865 motherboard with a P4 2.8Ghz.

Is it worth me swapping my Abit NF7 V2.0 with Athlon 2600 (333Mhz FBS) for the D1567 and P4? Would I see much of an increase in performance and gaming?

Looking at the motherboard manual, if the CPU runs at 533FSB (Which it does) the RAM runs at 333MHz (same as my Athlon) whether it is DDR400 or not.

I have never overcloked my Athlon, if I was too, would it match or beat the P4 2.8?

I was going to buy a new PC very soon but paying for my wedding took care of that Crying or Very sad

The P4 2.8Ghz would probably be a shade faster, but nothing much in it really as they are both old CPU's.

If it's a 533FSB chip, then it'll run either PC2100 or PC2700 by default (133*4 or 166*4 with a higher divider). DDR400 was first introduced with the 800FSB P4's.

If you overclocked your Athlon it would be quicker than the P4, but the same could be said for the P4 also.

It's probably wiser just to hang on to what you have for the time being, and buying a cheap PC later when your piggy bank is full.

Thanks for that.

The BIOS for the Siemens motherboard has no overclocking facility so dont think I would be able to overclock the P4.

Looking at prices it seems ridiculous that I could buy a P4 3.0Ghz 800Mhz FSB for £50 off ebuyer, but a Athlon XP3200 costs double that on ebay or any site that still sell them!

Am I right in thinking that to make life easier overclocking the Athlon I could replace the 2 sticks of 333Mhz RAM with 400Mhz so I am only overcloking the CPU and not the RAM? if thats the case I know somewhere I could get my hands on some 400Mhz RAM.........

Yeap. Depending on how much you want to overclock (or are able to), the 2 sticks of 333Mhz RAM you have now might even suffice since I'm sure they are overclockable, even if a little Smile But yes, DDR400 RAM would make life much easier, assuming you can get them very cheap.

You should be looking for Athlon XP Mobile 2500+ (or 2600+, or 2400+) as those used to be quite a bit cheaper than 3200+, have an unlocked multiplier and generally have no problem running at 2.4 Ghz or above. However, only buy it if you can find it cheap. I have such CPU running at 2.4 (200 * 12) and even at those frequencies the system is really showing it's age.
