The capabilities of onboard solutions are lacking. Typically they are bandwidth limited, not great quality, and can't handle many channels at once.

As far as 3d audio, that doesn't need a dedicated solution anymore now that XAudio 2 is out (and software) but we'll see what comes of that. I'm guessing it'll still have bandwidth limitations in its way.

Myself, I bought a dedicated card that is still software. But if this were out then I probably would've bought it, for older stuff as well as future stuff.
