hi guyz ,
me too ended up with the same problem..
usb aint working now.. it is detecting my thumb drives and they do work fine , but when i try plug-in in my phone ( M4410 ) or bluetooth ( dongle ) it just detects as unknown device. ( wont be corrected if installed with original drivers too), they do work fine on other machines and my old laptop.
did two formats and the whole installation of XP from scratch, nothing helped ..
sp's not installed yet , any other solution to offer before going for a pci- usb card ??
also did installing sp's help ?

Oooook. Here's what I did to fix this problem.
1. go to this website: http://www.usb.org/developers/tools/
and download USB command Verifier (USBCVr13Beta3.msi at the time of this writting) if website is down look for USBCV or USB command verifier.
2. run the MSI, it'll install the program.
3. go to Start->All programs-> USB-IF Test Suite -> USBCV ##
run USBCV.
4. In USBCV, just hit run at the bottom.
for me the test failed. but this forced what seemed like a reboot of the USB ports. windows then detected my USB mouse, reinstalled the drivers for it, and all my USB ports work fine now.

If this doesnt work for you, i did the following before i ran USBCV, have no idea if this affected the outcome.:
1. Start -> Run -> type in Regedit
2. In Regedit. File, export To export a backup of the registry in case you mess something up. If you do you can reimport it back later.
3. In Regedit, go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ USB
4. Once you're in the USB "folder", go to Edit, new, DWORD value
5. Select the new DWORD, then edit, Rename.
Rename it to DisableSelectiveSuspend
6. Double click the DWORD you renamed, and enter 1 for Value data, select Decimal for base.
7. Reboot PC. possibly repeat USBCV step.
PS: Sorry about bringing back old posts from the crypt !! I thought it sucked that this had no answer to on the entire internet !!
