Re: Folding @ Home Info

Well, so far so good, WU should be done in a few hours. It seems to be working quite well. I can never get it to use all of the CPU time though, when set to 100%, it uses only 50%- 80%of one core and 20% of the other... At least games are still playable while its crunching, but I'd like it to make better use of idle time. I've had the same issue with other DC clients as well.

Hi! :)

When you want to fold using both cores, you have to run a separate instance of the F@H client for each of them.

From the F@H configuration FAQ:

F@H configuration FAQ wrote:SPECIAL ISSUES

Computers with multiple CPUs (SMP) are supported under FAH by running multiple clients (one for each CPU). This is clearly non-ideal and better support is under development. There are certain caveats of using SMP boxes with special flags. Do not run multiple clients with each set to the most aggressive settings (bigWU + adv), as this can overwhelm most computers. Instead, we suggest bigWU+adv on one client and the default settings on the other(s). In situations where reliability, stability, and/or responsiveness a premium, we suggest either all clients with the default settings or just one client with the big WU enabled.

I recommend using the console version of F@H to maximize the use of your computer resources. It can be set as a windows service, and runs in the background without bothering you. My computer is always at 100% CPU use.

From the console FAQ:

console FAQ wrote:F@H Client Do's and Don'ts

The console is not an installer, but the actual Folding@Home client executable. In general, just download it, run it, and don't worry about it. However, if you like to be "hands on" with F@H, please keep in mind:

* Each different running copy of F@H has to have its own Machine ID number. If you download each copy of F@H from the web site and configure fresh, there will be no problems.
* Please don't manually retry to send WUs soon after a netsend failure. The netsend failure means that the server was probably overloaded and retrying will just make things worse.
* Do not run multiple copies of FAH from the same directory
* We have seen some issues with running the Windows console client with the service option and the Windows GUI version simultaneously. While we debug this, we recommend not combining these two options simultaneously.

There is a configuration routine that will run on the first time the console is executed, at which you will answer things like if you want it to be used as a service and how much of your CPU time it will be allowed to use.

That shold help you use the full resources of your PC. Be sure to check both of the above mentioned FAQ's, as they have lots of useful information besides the things I quoted.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress! :sweet:

Now that's what I'm talking about; its really putting this thing to work...
Thanks for digging all of that up for me, the console version is really easy to use.
Thanks again, your info was very helpful.

Whenever you need some help, just ask! :sweet:

And if you feel like talking shop with other folders and crunchers, or not doing that at all, the dc zone is a cool place to do it.

Not that we don't have our madness place over here, though...

Welcome to the team! :D

Just wait until you return a result to the F@H database and they have your data. I guess that you will probably return a unit in the next couple days; some 3-5 hours after that you will be able to have a nice sig :sweet:

By the way, are you using the GUI or console version? I use the console version as a service, it is the fastest and most inobstrusive way to do it in my opinion.

If you happen to have a dual core, we can give you info to use the most of your processor.
