Hey Guys...
I've been one of those people who hadn't upgraded (I mean really upgraded) in a while. My latest rig was P4 3.2 Ghz with 2Gb DDR400 RAM and ATI 9700 Pro.
Then my roommate "acquired" a copy of Assassin's Creed thinking it'll work on my old beast He was in for a surprise. So, I went on to Newegg and got a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, an E6750 and EVGA 8800GS. Got 4 Gb of 667Mhz RAM (2gb 800 + 2gb 667 i had lying around). Reused my 500 watt Antec Basiq Psu. As you can tell, my goal is not to overclock or top off all scores. It's basically to be able to play the latest games.
At first I put all the new stuff in my case. Connected the PSU and turned on the power switch. The system gave a lurch (the fans moved a bit) and all stopped. Tried it again and again.. didn't work. So, I went out and got another one of the same mobo and a new PSU (to see where the problem was). Got the new mobo working out of the case (with my old PSU), but it behaved the exact same way inside the case. A jerk at the fans and nothing after that.
Then, I tried it again outside the case with the new (750 watts) PSU. Heard a pop from the mobo. A loud pop too. I thought I toasted something. With trembling hand, I tried it again - and surprisingly it worked!
So, I figured it must be a short in the case. I removed all the extra mounts in the case and spray painted the motherboard tray with the mounts to reduce conductivity. Now it all works. Am away from home for a week, so can't play Assassin's Creed until next week
It's weird though - the fans on my CPU (stock) and PSU are rotating REALLY slow.. Also, none of my case fans are turning on. My friend told me it might have to do with mobo only turning on fans when needed. Is that right?
Also, I noticed the speed improvement from my old sys to new (obviously).. man it's so worth it. Installed Halo in under a minute. Jeez it's quick. XP loads like lightening. I'm gonna put a TB of hard drives on it (already had those for my older system). Excited about this. Please suggest some good games. Crysis is the one I'm trying next. |
