EP-8KDA3J POST FF Code

Postby iceman42 » Tue Jan 10, 2006 3:22 pm

I need some help, and I am by no means an expert, I have built 2-3 pcs and havent run into any issues until this one. Here is what happens. I plug in the PS, and turn on the switch in the back, and hit the power button on the case, and I see a light flash (LED) with a POST code of FF (could be flashing), between 1-2 seconds after I press the button it stops (fans and noise). In order to get it to go again, I have to turn the power button on the back of the PS off and on and then hit the power button on the front again, if I hold in the power button it goes for a second longer.

I bought a EP-8KDA3J and an AMD Sempron 3400+ Socket 754 64-Bit processor and 512MB Ram 2100. I have removed everything else.

So I have been plugging and unplugging, swapping power supplies and switches. Yes switches because at one point I played with the power button and it started up and went through the power up sequence until I shut it down, since I had nothing more then RAM, CPU and power plugged in. But adding a new switch didnt work does the same thing.

Any other thoughts?

Kinda sounds like the MB shorting out somewhere. Or the CPU is getting too hot and shuting itself down.

Before proceeding, take a peek that you've not fudged the heatsink installation. You wouldn't have been the first to have put a HS/F on wrong

Oh, also see that the CPU fan is plugged in, and plugged in to the proper header. In the manual I just d/l'd
the proper header is behind the KB/Mouse port, labeled JCPU_FAN. Some(most!) MB's will look for an
RPM signal from the CPU fan before doing much of anything.

Following the manuals reccomendations, have you tried clearing the CMOS?

Page iii of the EP-8KDA3J Manual(MB r1), 80 Port Frequently Asked Questions. Possible that your current BIOS
revision doesn't support the 3400+?

Are both the 20pin ATX and 4pin ATX12V plugged in tight?

Time to pull the MB out and bench it with only the CPU, video card, and one stick of ram(in the proper slot).

DO NOT use the anti-static bag to set the MB on while doing this. Many of these bags are conductive
on the outside. Use the MB box to place the MB on while doing this. Or anything else that isn't conductive.

I've done everything you listed, thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to try and short the power pins, which I doubt will do anything. The CPU fan is plugged in and works for the brief second that the power is on, or that one time until I shut it down, it is also "picture perfect" according to the CPU manual and the motherboard manual. According to the Epox website and the place where I bought the MB a 3400+ is supported by the MB. I have seated, reseated and double checked the 20pin ATX and 4pin ATX12V plugs.

I'm running out of ideas, and the only thing that gives me hope was the fact that it actually started up once, during the middle of this whole thing, although I have had trouble duplicating the way I pressed the button.

When you got it running how long was it "on' for, and what did the POST look like?

What video card are you using?

It was on until I turned it off, the system had RAM, CPU/FAN and PS plugged in that was it, the video card is on board, not sure I am going to use that as I have a 5200Fx. The POST was going through many different/changing codes, I could not get them all, I think the last one started with a C but I cant remember the last symbol.
