NEW YORK (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said Tuesday it filed an antitrust suit alleging that Intel Corp. has an unlawful monopoly in the x86 microprocessor market.

AMD (Research) said it filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in Delaware. AMD said Intel (Research) has coerced customers from dealing with AMD.

AMD said it identified 38 companies that have been victims of coercion by Intel. It said the companies include large scale computer makers, small system builders, wholesale distributors, and retailers.

"Everywhere in the world, customers deserve freedom of choice and the benefits of innovation -- and these are being stolen away in the microprocessor market," Hector Ruiz, AMD chairman, president and chief executive, said in a statement.

The x86 microprocessors run Microsoft Corp.'s (Research) Microsoft Windows and other operating systems.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., could not immediately be reached for comment.

AMD is based in Sunnyvale, Calif.

they are more a "budget" chip in many cases (see lots of XP's) but the A64's just aint in the machines that are off the shelf stuff, maybe intel OEM's are really cheap and people just want Ghz Razz

Yeah I think that got linked here on the forums once before because I've read it. And Gilly's right, the severely uneducated masses are funny like that... If only AMD could come up and patent to where ghZ stood for something different and could just start off saying 5.2ghZ blows away the competition's 3.2GHz processors...

I can see it now: The AMD 5.2ghZ [(geebus holy speeds) (the z is a backwards s rendtion due to the "high speed" spinning of the s in speed lol)]

to someone not educated in the finer pc hardware, 3.0Ghz will be better than a measly 2.2Ghz and for encoding it is, but not every average person wants to do that Razz

Err, not sure what you mean by that, but this suit is all about why the likes of Dell offer limited/no AMD based systems:

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050628-5047.html

Quote:

# Forcing other major customers such as NEC, Acer, and Fujitsu into partial exclusivity agreements by conditioning rebates, allowances and market development funds (MDF) on customers' agreement to severely limit or forego entirely purchases from AMD
# Establishing and enforcing quotas among key retailers such as Best Buy and Circuit City, effectively requiring them to stock overwhelmingly or exclusively, Intel computers, artificially limiting consumer choice
# Forcing PC makers and tech partners to boycott AMD product launches or promotions

I can sum up, in one word, why AMD is bringing this case forward in the US: Japan.

AMD's win in Japan set the stage by providing precedence and history. I don't remember if there are cases present in Europe, but if the US courts botch this then it will make the US look very pro-monopoly and hostile to emerging/growing market entities.

THe implications are greater than I thought originally. Go Mean Green!
