Vista does that exact same as long you don't allow vista update do anything in process and what ever says 'recommended' circle far away. It'll go in.. I can even force Ac'97 on my HD audio ofcourse problem is it wouldn't work, but the point is you can install what ever control panel you wish and update drivers through device manager.
Ideally modified drivers and this is exactly same deal. So there is no need to modify as you do not have correct pointing config for the earlier devices anyway.

Well, that is the problem that I was having. The installer did not work, and "forcing" the install via the device manager did not work either. So, after I added the correct hardware ID information, both install methods worked perfectly.
