eVGA NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT SLI Review

December 15th 2004 | Graphics Cards

So now that you have seen the numbers and graphs is SLI worth the extra $200 video card? Right now I would say no simply because drivers aren’t there yet. I would however suggest that if you want to upgrade PCI-Express with an SLI option would be an extremely wise choice. My perfect value system would be an SLI capable system with a 6600 GT. With the option of adding another card to your system in SLI mode, a 6600 GT has more performance per dollar than any other video card.

For example lets compare the price to performance ratio of an AGP Chaintech 5700 Ultra to this PCI-E eVGA 6600 GT. The 6600 GT is just shy of $200 on newegg, I think $197.50 to be exact (price accurate as of 12/14/2004). The 5700 Ultra is also just shy of $200 at $186.50. For $11 more you get a performance increase of about 30%. That is simply amazing. You also have the option of almost doubling the performance in some applications with another video card.

If I haven’t given justice as to why this upgrade path is a wise choice then I don’t think I will be able to convince you. PCI-E is fresh off the boat. Before I say run out and buy I would suggest that you wait and see where driver development goes. Not only the video driver development but the chipset driver development as well.
