Creative GigaWorks S750 Speaker System Review

January 30th 2004 | Multimedia

Extreme Tech has reviewed the GigaWorks S750, Creative’s latest high-end 7.1 speaker system offering a new satellite design, more amplification, and an optional Dolby Digital/DTS decoder:

Does a PC really need a 7.1 speaker system of this caliber? In a word, no. But with the new decoder box, the GigaWorks speakers are taking aim at small living rooms and dens everywhere. Given their combination of performance and features they offer, the GigaWorks could do very well in those rooms, serving up music, DVD movies, and console gaming audio. You could call it “Home Theater in a Box,” except for the lack of a DVD player. We put the GigaWorks through an especially tough battery of tests and came away impressed. To find out if the GigaWorks are a good fit for you, read on. All will be revealed.

. . . The GigaWorks represent an interesting addition to Creative’s growing line of speakers. The DDTS-100 decoder box certainly opens up many more possibility as to where these speakers can live, since you can plug you’re A/V components into it and get both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding. The one downside we should note here, however, is price. To our ears, the GigaWorks S700 (5.1) and S750 (7.1) do sound notably better (and louder) than Logitech’s Z-680s, but the GigaWorks, even in the 5.1 configuration, are considerably more expensive. The Z-680s can be found online for around $250, whereas the 5.1 GigaWorks system with the decoder box would be, at around $470, nearly twice as much.
