Today, we will be taking a look at the Chaintech Apogee FX71 (A-FX71), or in other words, Chaintech’s version of the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 Ultra. This card utilizes the GeForce FX 5600 Ultra GPU at stock speeds of 400 MHz and 128 MB DDR clocked at 800 MHz. Hidden underneath a large plastic cover, this card is visually very different from any other card we have come across. The card also comes bundled with a few software programs and some nifty extras.
..Our efforts in determining the value of the A-FX71 didn’t turn out how we had hoped. The 5600 is the original card in the series which can be found as low as $120. The 5600 Ultra is a higher performing revision of the 5600 and can be found as low as $150. The 5600 XT is a newer, albeit lower performing version of the 5600 which can be found under $100. The 5700 Ultra, which performs better than the 5600 XT, 5600 and 5600 Ultra, can be found as low as $140. Finally, the 5900 XT, which outperforms all of the above, can be found for as low as $170!
Compare all this to the Chaintech A-FX71, which is powered by the 5600 Ultra GPU, and can be found as low as $210! While the A-FX71 is obviously not the value card we were looking for, it is still a decent performer and has a more-than-average bundle. The cooling solution for the A-FX71 is a huge plus, but obviously does not justify the cost. In the end, if you are looking for a budget card, Chaintech does manufacture all of the aforementioned cards, ranging from $100 to $200.
