BenQ DW1620 16x DVD+-RW Double Layer Writer Review

October 25th 2004 | Storage

Today we will take a look at yet another 16x DVD writer, this time from BenQ. Not to be confused with the DW1610, the new DW1620 offers the same capabilities but adds support for double layer writing. While not a 4x double layer writer, this drive is set to compete against the Lite-On SOHW-1633s and LG GSA-4160B. This is the first time we’ll be checking out a product from BenQ and based on all I’ve read, it appears to be a well performing drive. Let’s take it for a spin to see if it is indeed impressive.

…About the only thing I could come up with that may disappoint many is the fact that it is not a 4x double layer writer. However, few drives offer overall excellent performance and superior media compatibility. For this, the BenQ DW1620 earns our highest recommendation and "Extreme Excellence Award".

Pros
Overall excellent performance
Superior media compatibility
Full 99min CDR media support
Excellent ripping performance
Lowest recognition times
Low Price
Cons
No 4x double layer writing
No DVD-RAM support
