The Tech Zone has reviewed the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro:
At the other end of the spectrum is the monstrous 9800XT which will run any current game with ease and will be able to handle future games. This luxury comes at the price of $500, something many can only dream of. Well what about those who have a little more than $200 to burn and want a card that won’t give up when they try to play Doom ]|[. This is where the 9800 Pro comes in. At $200 less than the 9800XT but $100 more than the 9600XT, is the performance worth the purchase? In the benchmarks we will compare the 9800 Pro to the 9800XT and in the near future will have a 9600XT and FX5700 to compare it to.
. . . In conclusion, the ATI 9800 Pro is without a doubt the best choice for people looking to get a graphic card that will be able to run next generation games without burning $500. As you saw from the benchmark results, with a little overclocking, the 9800 Pro can perform very close to the stock 9800 XT. I would have to think that weighing the options of spending $200 more for the XT or overclocking the 9800 Pro for free would lead most to chose the latter. With the new R420 cards due out in March, I would strongly suggest waiting for their release and then reevaluate which card to buy after all of the prices have been readjusted. My guess is that the 9800 Pro will drop to $200-$250 and the XT will be around the $300 mark. If the R420 just blows the current 9800 line out of the water, these prices may be even lower then I estimate. Even with the 9800XT and the FX5950 out there, the Radeon 9800 Pro is still a high class card that will satisfy anyones gaming needs.
