May 31st 2005 | Graphics Cards

ATI today offically announced its Crossfire Multi GPU technology, which allows users to install two graphics cards in their PCI-Express PC. An alternative to NVIDIA’s SLI technology, ATI claims its solution is superior as it offers: Best performance, Superior image quality, Works on all games, Powered by enthusiast chipset, Flexible graphics card support.

t-break - We have some performance graphs on the following page, however, these were provided to us by ATI as well. Again, we don’t have much reason to doubt the validity of the following numbers, but it will only be until after we’ve tested them in our labs that we could give a final verdict. At least on paper- it looks good.

AMDZone - You can see ATI is going for the jugular. If ATI can deliver top performance, better image quality, can work on all games, and are more flexible on video card support they will have a winner on their hands.

Anandtech - If ATI can get CrossFire out to the market in good volume (for its potential demand), we could have an excellent alternative to SLI on our hands. ATI is also working on licensing CrossFire to SiS, so we may see SiS based boards with CrossFire support early next year as well. Exhaustive performance tests remain to be run, but from a feature standpoint, CrossFire looks good.

HardOCP - When it’s all said and done, NVIDIA’s SLI is king as it has provided the highest level of gameplay performance to date and simply had no competition. It now appears that ATI is on the scene and wants to dethrone them. ATI assured us that retail CrossFire cards would be available to consumers in July…of this year. Only time will tell who will rule the dual video card world we live in. Regardless, gamers that are able to afford dual video card technology and desire the best gaming performance will be the winners.
