ASUS - ASUS A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 Review @ Overclockers New Zealend

December 20th 2002 | Hardware

Hans Chang reviews the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe @ Overclockers New Zealand. Includes memory benchmark comparisions using 1x 256MB, 1x 512MB and 2x 256MB modules and lots of BIOS screenshots. Don’t miss the link to an explanation of three-phase power circuits.

Asus has a pretty comprehensive package for the A7N8X Deluxe. It has everything one needs to setup a PC, from SATA cables to driver CD. The included case sticker clearly indicates the location of various jumpers/connectors which makes installation so much easier. It is evident from the above benchmarks that A7N8X is without doubt THE fastest AMD platform (single CPU) on the market now. It blitzes through the benchmarks like a thunder, surpassing all other VIA boards. It is amazing what Nvidia has achieved in a years time. (sigh @ VIA) They’ve certainly learnt from last year’s mistake. Sadly, the board is not the most stable board on the market. Let us hope that future BIOS release(s) could remedy this.

The highly hyped dual bank DDR technology is nearly useless in reality. From the figures above, it offers around 0~2% performance gain over single bank configuration. The EV6 bus is having a hard time supplying the required bandwidth, on the other hand, the P4 CPUs could benefit from the dual bank DDR configuration due to the QDP architecture. Note: The dual bank DDR would become useful if onboard graphics card is utilized.
