ASUS A8N-SLI nForce4 SLI Motherboard Review

January 31st 2005 | nForce4

Lets not beat about the bush here, Asus have done it again. The A8N-SLI is overall the fastest AMD board we’ve tested. Whilst it doesn’t clean up in every test we ran the differences in performance between it and the Radeon Xpress retail board are minimal in the tests it doesn’t win. As we would expect from Asus the board was also rock solid in terms of stability, there was no occasion in our testing that the board failed in any respect. To be honest I can’t even remember a time that an application or game has crashed on the system due to a motherboard/stability issue…what more could you want?

Those of you who read through our detailed explanation of the board bios, layout and bundle will also be aware that this is one board that really doesn’t disappoint in those areas either. From the 8 Sata connectors and Dual GB LAN to the huge bundle of extra cables and connectors you really shouldn’t run out of ports to connect to any time soon. It was also nice to see the 64bit versions of each driver bundled with the board in advance of XP 64bit being launched (its even more handy now that RC1 is available for download from Microsoft).

As we mentioned in the layout section of the review we were not 100% happy with the chipset fan Asus have used however having completed our testing and written up the results that’s the only aspect of the whole product that we didn’t like. With that minor feature being the only concern you should have no hesitation in running out to buy the A8N-SLI if you are in the market for a socket 939 motherboard.
