Alpha PAL8150 K8 Heatsink Review

SystemCooling reviews the Alpha PAL8150 heatsink for K8 (Athlon 64) processors:

I’ll start this by stating the same thing that so many other Alpha reviews have stated - this is one BIG heatsink. Measuring in at 79mm wide and 105mm long, it dwarfs most any other K8 cooler around. It also weighs in at a massive 715 grams, which also makes it one of the heavier ones around, in spite of the fact that the heatsink is constructed primarily of aluminum. The PAL8150 is of hybrid construction, with a aluminum base equipped with a copper insert. The base is populated with over 500 aluminum pins that are hexagonal in cross section, and offer a tremendous amount of surface area to enhance its cooling efficiency. As we mentioned, the dimensions are 79mmx80mm, and when equipped with a standard 25mm high fan, the overall height is 81mm.

..After my previous experiences with Alpha heatsinks, I had high hopes for the PAL8150, and it certainly did not disappoint. The PAL features great workmanship and great performance, at a price that won’t break the bank. The only criticism I have at all is actually pretty nit-picky, and that is that serious performance freaks might lament the fact that the fan moutning screws are not long enough to accommodate a 38mm high cooling fan, such as the Vantec Tornado or Delta EHE. But then again, there is probably not enough performance to be gained to make it worthwhile to install a 38mm fan in the first place, so why even bother.
