Whenever a new version of 3D Mark comes out, it automatically becomes the new standard in graphics and system benchmarking. Without a doubt, this is the most intensive version to date, and stresses your system like never before. Every single test has been amped up, and the CPU test is incredibly intensive. Overall, it’s a massive test, and works well.

I got my hands on the final code for 3DMark06 a little while ago and I’ve been playing with it a lot, running it on different hardware setups with different settings and comparing results. My initial reactions to the benchmark were “This looks amazing” followed by “this is really hammering the hardware”. One thing’s for sure, I can’t criticise 3DMark06 for not using cutting edge features.

The GeForce 7800 GTX 256MB, which is not the cheapest card on the market by any means, simply CRAWLS and struggles to complete this benchmark with acceptable framerates. The score was 4000 3DMarks. Yikes! Your high-end hardware almost looks low-end performance wise.

That being said I feel that the new ‘06 is finished, complete and exactly what it should be. The new features introduced are breathtaking and the end-result is looking astounding. We can only hope to play games in such an environment.
